Cultivating Self Love

CULTIVATING SELF LOVE

What is Love? Love is a very complex and loaded word. It has been given different definitions by the church and by society throughout the ages. I believe there are as many definitions of love as there are people. This article discusses self-love and why it is important. Self-love is not just a buzzword. It is a foundation for living a vibrant fulfilling life. When we calculate self-love, what we are doing is creating space for growth, resilience, and connection to ourselves, others, and the universe.

Self-love is simply unconditional love for self. It is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological, and spiritual growth When we practice self-love, we open doors to share what we have with those around us.  Self-love is embracing who you are, your flaws, strengths, and everything in between. It is not about being perfect or self-absorbed, it is about honoring your worth and treating yourself with the same kindness and compassion you extend to others.

Why is self-love Important?

  1. It Improves Mental Health – Self-love helps us to have a more positive mindset, reducing self-criticism and allowing us to boost our self-esteem. This in turn helps us against anxiety, depression, and burnout.
  2.  Strengthens Resilience – Self-love equips us to handle life’s challenges with grace. We are unlikely to internalize setbacks and personal failures.
  3. Enhances Relationships – The relationship we have for ourselves sets the tone for other relationships. Love thy neighbor as thy self.  Can you give what you do not have to another person?
  4. Promotes Authenticity – Self-love empowers us to show up as our true selves, unapologetically and to make choices that are aligned with our values.

How do you cultivate Self-love?

Live intentionally, with purpose and design. Strive for a meaningful and healthy life and declutter your mind. Lastly, and probably the most important step is to forgive yourself and others. When you let go of the past through forgiveness, you are on your way to a blissful life.
